And he said, "Lady, would you spare me some CHANGE?"

I anticipate that society, for the most part, deems a homeless man of little worth.  Initially this challenge was about going against that train of thought.  Somewhere along the way, however, I stumbled upon a new idea.  Maybe the population has also mustered up a stereotype of these people.  It wasn’t my mission to set out and find three homeless men of different race, but I think it is interesting and enlightening to acknowledge that I have done just that. 

To me, this challenge, and art in general, is all about the process.  

As an artist, you start with an idea, you create, you make, you construct, you change your idea, and continue building on that initial thought.

Yesterday started with an idea...

It all started with a challenge...

The Parsons Challenge

It’s innate to be inspired by the innovation and success that loom the streets of Manhattan.  In a city motivated by maintaining its image, it is difficult not to judge the population based on what is conceived at first glance.  Though it would be challenging to capture the essence of something, or someone, already made beautiful, I have attempted to illuminate the beauty beyond an objects surface.  In this piece I have rendered a man noted by most for his lack of possessions, a man that most regard as worthless.   I made it my objective to show this man’s value. 

In this painting, I intentionally used vibrant colors and fast brush strokes to convey a feeling of life and movement.  I wanted to make the homeless man stand out against the concrete shelter he was confined to; the subway station.  I wanted to make a point that this man is more than a prop among the city bustle and that he deserves more thought than the trash that litters the sidewalk.  To me, this man has a story.   This man has a past that was worth listening to and it is my intention to capture the spirit of this man that sparked my curiosity so others will take an interest too. 

And this challenge has fueled my biggest change yet...
